Composition is a defining element in any artwork. Often unobtrusive, it can rule the atmosphere of your piece, add calm or suspense, and meaning. To be aware of and make active use of its workings is a powerful tool at any stage of your artistic career.
What we will do
-You’ll learn how to arrange and rearrange what you see, and how this impacts your artwork.
-You’ll learn to play with what you see to create specific effects or add subtext.
-You’ll have a look at how masters of their art used composition in different ways, and how you can incorporate their techniques into your own pieces.
We’ll use variable objects to showcase the possibilities and impact of composition. We’ll review our drawings and share our insights throughout the class. We’ll work in black and white, with pencils and charcoal.
Materials will be provided.
Jacoba Paulus
Jacoba is a visual artist, illustrator and art teacher. Over the years her focus has shifted from jewellery making to classical portrait and landscape painting to more imaginative depictions of her subjects. Her preferred mediums are oils and inks.
6 years ago she moved from her native Hamburg to Scotland. Inspired by the new experience of living in a small Borders town her work has developed towards a community minded practice.
